The poultry industry has made strenuous efforts to eradicate salmonella, and has enjoyed a large measure of success. But the potential for infection remains - and with 2007 seeing quarterly monitoring of layer flocks, so does the potential for business disaster.
The main culprit in the spread of salmonella is the mouse. With warm, sheltered conditions and a constant free food supply, a poultry house is mouse heaven. And given their extraordinary rate of reproduction (one female could produce over 600 descendants in a year) it is vital to eradicate mice infestations quickly and effectively.
